アンソロジーのなかのナボコフ⑧The World in Vogue, New York: Viking,1963.

今回紹介するアンソロジーはThe World in Vogue (New York: Viking,1963)です。

といってもこれはアンソロジーというよりは、ファッション誌『ヴォーグ』の七十周年記念の総集編みたいな内容です。

This book was published on the magazine’s seventieth anniversary and is a compendium of its best writing, photographs, and illustration with contributions by the many of the best writers, photographers, and artists of the 20th Century. Fashion is but one of the subjects covered. As Vogue editor-in-chief Jessica Daves writes in her introduction to this book, Vogue speaks to a reading audience “moved by hunger, love, and fear; to seek amusement; to feel envy, desire, curiosity, and [possess] an avid interest in the new,” in art, fashion, philosophy, music, society, etc.

目次が長すぎて全体を写せないほどです。

中身はこんな感じで、エッセイと写真の組み合わせです。

  肝心のナボコフと言うと、こんな感じでホルスト・タッペの写真と紹介文が掲載されています。ほかの人とはちがい、捕虫網と雨合羽というスタイルです。

1960年代から70年代にかけて、ナボコフは数回『ヴォーグ』誌上でインタヴューを受けました。そのあたりのことは著書でも書きました（四章「フィルムのなかのナボコフ」）。しかし、この本の刊行された63年の時点でこのような本が出るほど、どういう関係があったのでしょうか。そのあたりのことはよくわかりませんが・・・

冒頭三作をLoveでそろえたといったところでしょうか。

収録されている作家でほかに有名どころは、 アーウィン・ショー、ジョイス・キャロル・オーツでしょうか。

ほかには推理小説家ヘンリー・スレッサー（1927-）、脚本家ケン・コルブ（1926-）、ジェームス・D・ヒューストン（1933-2009）などがいます。

あとはハーバート・ゴールド。この人はナボコフのアンソロジーにほんとよくでてきます。

ナボコフは「さっそうたる男」が収録されています。例によってロシア語作品の自己翻訳です。この作品も、『プレイボーイ』1971年12月号に掲載されました。

前回までとちがって、『ロリータ』刊行後のアンソロジーですね。

『ロリータ』刊行後はもちろんいろんなアンソロジーにナボコフの作品は収録されていくことになるわけです。

このアンソロジーの編者はジェローム・チャーリン（1937-）。

日本ではミステリ系の作家として紹介されていたようです。ただし邦訳にはそれほど恵まれていない様子。

ジョン・バース(1930-)、フィリップ・ロス(1933-2018)、ジョン・ホークス(1925-1998)、ウィリアム・ギャス(1924-2017)、ソール・ベロー(1915-2005)、グレイス・ペイリー（1922-2007）、トマス・ピンチョン(1937-)、ジョーゼフ・ヘラー(1923-1999)、ドナルド・バーセルミ(1931-1989)、フラナリー・オコナー(1925-1964)、ケン・キージー（1935-2001）など、かなり有名どころもはいっていますね。ジョン・レノン（1940-）までいます。

やはりここでポイントは69年の時点ではかなり若い作家がたくさん入っていることです。チャーリンが自分の世代の作家を中心に集めたのでしょう。30代、40代の作家が中心で、70歳のナボコフはかなり年齢だけ見れば浮いています。

ホルヘ・ルイス・ボルヘス、トンマーゾ・ランドルフィなど、英語圏以外の作家も入っています。

「じゃがいもエルフ」はロシア語作品の英訳です。

 この作品は、セルジュ・ベルテンソンとイレーネ・コシンスカ訳で一九三九年に『エスクワイア』に掲載されました。ナボコフにとってはアメリカで出版された最初期の英訳になりました。

のちに、この短編をナボコフは息子と共訳して、自分の短編集にいれています。

ナボコフは特別に、アペル・ジュニアによる解説がついているのもおもしろいですね。この解説はかなり長いもので、伝記と「パターン」、「パロディ」、「作品内作品」、「作者の声」など文学技法を紹介しています。

今回はナボコフが収録されそうでされなかった幻のアンソロジーを紹介します。

この本は新興出版社ニューディレクションズの創業十周年を祝って企画されたものでした。

To commemorate, and celebrate, the first ten years' activity ... by reprinting some of the best work that was published in the annual volumes of New directions in prose & poetry p. 9.

編集したのはもちろん創業者のジェイムズ・ロフリン。

表紙のデザインは当時、ニューディレクションズのデザインを一手にひきうけていたアルヴィン・ルスティグでした。

ニューディレクションズの雑誌『ニューディレクションズ・イン・プローズ・アンド・ポエトリー』に収録された作品中心のようですが、デルモア・シュウォーツ「夢の中で責任が始まる」のように、そうでないものもありますね。

ほかにもケイ・ボイル、ヘンリー・ミラー、ケネス・レックスロスのようなニューディレクションズの常連作家たちにまじって、ロフリンが自分の作品をいれているのがご愛敬です（笑）。

ほかにもエズラ・パウンド、アナイス・ニン、ガートルード・スタイン、E・E・カミングス、ウィリアム・カーロス・ウィリアムズ、チャールズ・ヘンリー・フォードなど有名どころもずらり。

このアンソロジーをここで紹介したのは、当初ロフリンはナボコフをここに収録しようとしていたからです。 候補としてロフリンが選んだのはロシア語作品の英訳「雲、城、湖」でした。

しかし、結局、どうした理由かこの採録は幻になってしまいます。

前回紹介したThe Best American Short Storiesは毎年ごとに刊行されるアンソロジーでした。ナボコフは1946年、二度目の収録をされました。

1949年7月、ナボコフはユタ大学でひらかれた作家会議に出席するため、ソルトレイクシティをおとずれます。そこで会ったのが、Ｗallace Stegner、Ted Geiselや、John Crowe Ransom、そしてMartha Foleyでした。

The Big Black and White Gameは邦訳もありますね（「黒白対抗戦」）。あとは、チャールズ・アンゴフ（1902－1979）、ヘンリエッタ・ウェイジェル（1906-1981）、アン・ペトリー(1908-1997)、ピーター・テイラー（1917-1994）、ジョゼフィーン・ジョンソン(1910-1990)、W・O・ミッチェル（1914-1998）、A・J・リーブリング（1904-1963）、エリザベス・ハードウィック（1916-2007）、ベシー・ブレアー（1893-1975）、ベン・ハー・ランプマン（1886-1954）、W・R・バーネット（1899-1982）、メアリー・ディーシー（1914-1978）、グラディス・シュミット（1909-1979）といった作家たちです。

さて、こういったアンソロジーですが、どのように読まれていたのでしょうか。

C・V・テリーなる人文が、『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』に本書の書評を書いています。

 If the 1946 nosegay, as a whole, seems rather anemic, if the prefume it exhales recalls the vinegar-vat rather than rosemary, one must remember that even the "best" short stories are a product of their season.

全体的に低調だという内容で、とりあげられているのは、トリリングやペトリぐらいで、ナボコフにはまったく触れられていません。

 Pergaps the most depressing thing about the collection, however, is the fear of life that courses through its pages like a gray pulse. Too many of the stories dally with that despair, without really attempting to find the cause. Far too many hide their heads in rhetoric, like modish ostriches, when the chips are down.
