Nabokov@New York City 6 Hotel Hampshire House (room 503),　150 Central Park S 1960, October 15-November 2, 1960

1960年、ナボコフは再度アメリカに戻って来ました。スタンリー・キューブリック監督の『ロリータ』の脚本を書き下ろすためです。
西海岸で脚本を執筆した後、ＮＹＣにやってきたさいに宿泊したのがHotel Hampshire Houseの503号室でした。

ここは本当にセントラル・パークから通り隔ててすぐ、というロケーションでしたね。

On reaching New York on October 15, the Nabokovs had taken room 503 in the Hampshire House, with "a wonderful view over Central Park: the Gobelin crumps of trees, and, along its edge, mysterious skyscrapers shaded with a lilac wash under a Poussin sky." In the same letter to his sister, Nabokov writes that he has "thought up something big." Six days later, in his Hampshire House bathroom, the plan came to him with such clarity he set it down in his diary: "The Theme a novel, a life, a love--which is only the elaborate commentary to a gradually evolved short poem." 日記に書いたところによれば、この503号室のバスルームで詩に付した膨大な注釈という体裁の小説、『青白い炎』の着想が芽生えたそうです。
