ラインアップはかなり独特です。ホルヘ・ルイス・ボルヘス、サマセット・モーム、フリオ・コルタサル、ラドヤード・キプリング、Ｈ・Ｇ・ウェルズ、アンブローズ・ビアス、エドガー・アラン・ポー、プロスペール・メリメ、テオドール・ゴーチェなどといった作家にくわえ、マルコ・ポーロやアプレイウス、中国の詩人や作家、左丘明、列子、荘子、蘇軾、白行簡などがはいっているのが目を引きます。
なお、ナボコフとこの伝説とのかかわりについては、以前論じました。
ナボコフの作品は初期のロシア語作品（の英訳）「博物館への訪問」が収録されています。この作品の英訳は『エスクァイア』1963年3月1日号が初出なので、おそらくナボコフは同時並行的にこの作品を雑誌とアンソロジーに売却したことになるでしょう。
