メモ：ボルヘスの自己翻訳２

前のエントリの続き。

1968年から71年までブエノスアイレスでボルヘスと共同作業した英訳者ノーマン・トマス・ディ＝ジョバンニの回想・インタヴューを読む機会がありました。

Cardinal Points of Borges

本人のエッセイ"At Work with Borges" (pp. 67-78) によると、

[. . .] at this point our sole aim is to see that the piece reads as though it were written in English. Small adjustments are made--a word changed here and there, sometimes a phrase altered. Occasionally Borges add a sentence or a bit of dialogue or make an emendation that did not occur to him while he wrote the Spanish. we usually translate this dictated material from English into Spanish for insertion into the original text--if it is unpublished. If the work is already in print, we supply his publisher with a list of changes for future editions. p. 71

かなりスペイン語原文と英語翻訳の境目が曖昧な感じで作業していたようですね。

またブエノスアイレス生まれの著名なジャーナリスト、文筆家のAndrew Graham-Yoollの回想記

Committed Observer: Memoirs of a Journalist

に収録されたノーマン・トマス・ディ＝ジョバンニへのインタヴューによれば、

We moved between Spanish and English. He would dictate in Spanish, but would just as easily dictate an amendment in English, and then we had to insure that this went into the Spanish as well. He wanted everything to be perfect, especially because his stories were so small. But with this anecdote I am able to say that we finished the story in English before it was completed in Spanish. p. 140

もはやこうなるとスペイン語が原文だとさえ言えなくなってきていますね。けっこう衝撃かも。*1

まだ調べればいろいろとおもしろいことが出てきそうですが、このあたりの資料が意外に日本の大学図書館にはないんですよね……。全部海外から取り寄せていたらたまらんですし。。。

*1:ちなみにこのインタヴューによれば、英訳版Universal History of Infamyも作者との共訳だったのらしいのですが、契約もあり気をつかったボルヘスが自分の名前を外したらしいです（p. 141）
